At The Real Homosexuals of the Southern Highlands, we believe in unapologetic authenticity, bold leadership, and the power of connection.
Our mission is to create safe, joyful, and inclusive spaces where queer locals and allies can thrive.
Our vision? To be the leading LGBTQI+ community network in the Highlands - one that celebrates diversity, empowers queer lives, and drives inclusivity across the region. That vision is fuelled by passionate leaders like Braeden Rhys, our co-founder, Director of Marketing, LGBTQI+ Advocacy & Public Affairs, Public Relations, and Strategic Operations.

Who is Braeden?
“I’m not here to help people fit in - I’m here to help people stand OUT.” - Braeden Rhys
Braeden is an award-winning entrepreneur, strategist, entertainer, and fierce advocate for equality. With more than a decade of experience across marketing, PR, business growth, and entertainment, Braeden has transformed over 5,000 businesses worldwide, generating more than $500 million in revenue growth.
He’s also no stranger to the spotlight.
As his alter ego Kara Zmatiq, Australia’s Best Live-singing drag queen, Braeden has wowed audiences on Australia’s Got Talent, Sydney Mardi Gras, and WorldPride and since moving to the Southern highlands is recognised as 'The Queen Of The Southern Highlands' for his contribution to celebrating diversity and inclusion across many venues in the region introducing Mardi Gras Parties, Drag Bingo, Drag Trivia and Drag Brunch amplifying visibility, celebration and inclusion for the LGBTQI+ Community.

But beneath the sequins and strategy lies one core value: authenticity.
Why The Real Homosexuals?
For Braeden, this movement is deeply personal:
“I spent years trying to fit into someone else’s idea of success, hiding my identity and silencing my truth. The moment I chose authenticity, everything changed: my business grew, my voice got louder, and I realised how much power comes from simply being yourself. That’s why I’m so passionate about creating spaces where our community can thrive without ever having to shrink.”
Braeden knows the Highlands has long needed a network that does more than host catch-ups, one that actively partners with businesses, advocates for equality, and amplifies LGBTQI+ voices. That’s why he co-founded The Real Homosexuals to ensure no one ever feels they have to go it alone.

A Vision for Change
Braeden is passionate about building connections between queer locals, allies, and businesses:
“I’m excited to collaborate with local businesses - not just the queer-owned or queer-friendly ones, but those committed to real change. Together, we can show that inclusivity is good for community and good for business.”
His leadership drives our Highlands Certified program, which recognises inclusive businesses, and our advocacy efforts, which bring LGBTQI+ concerns to council and regional decision-makers.

Why Braeden Matters
Braeden embodies the ethos of connection, liberation, celebration, and inclusion. His career has earned him accolades like Top 100 Young Entrepreneur Australia and Top 40 Under 40 Business Leader, but what drives him most is community.
As a co-founder, Braeden ensures The Real Homosexuals isn’t just a network - it’s a movement. One that uplifts queer lives, strengthens visibility, and inspires every person in the Highlands to live boldly and unapologetically in collaboration with community businesses, local council and allies throughout the region.
